Candidates
The Multnomah County Young Democrats support candidates for public office who are concerned with the welfare of Oregonians, who will create jobs in a socially responsible manner, and who will protect the environment of Oregon. The following candidates for statewide office, regional office, and local office exemplify these important characteristics, thereby gaining our expressed support.
Statewide Office
John Kitzhaber for Governor of Oregon
John Kitzhaber has the experience and ideas necessary to lead Oregon into the future. He has been active in Oregon politics since 1979. As governor he:
-Brought healthcare to Oregonians in poverty through creation of the Oregon Health Plan.
-Helped identify at risk children through the Oregon Children's Plan.
-Protected salmon runs through the Oregon Salmon Plan.
-Created 125,000 jobs.
-Jumpstarted Oregon's green economy.
John Kitzhaber's past successes as governor as well as his proposal to create jobs, protect the environment, make Oregonians healthier, and improve education make him the ideal choice for governor of Oregon.
Regional Office
Bob Stacey for Metro President
As a community leader, activist and manager of agencies that have successfully worked to improve our neighborhoods and transportation, Bob Stacey has a real track record of keeping our part of Oregon a great place to live – and of making sure that our voices are heard. Bob has demonstrated the values and priorities we need at Metro.
-He has been a leader in keeping our neighborhoods attractive, safe and walkable places to live, with easy access to everyday needs.
-Bob protected over 15,000 acres of environmentally sensitive areas right in the city, while leading the successful statewide effort to protect Oregon's farms, forestlands, open spaces and special places from destructive over-development.
-His work has made it easier for us to get around every part of the Metro region, with light rail, streetcars and expanded suburban bus service>
-He has been the leader in protecting the urban growth boundary, which keeps nature close at hand while saving tax dollars when there is new development. And Bob has successfully worked to ensure that development protects neighborhoods while creating jobs for our future.
Local Office
Nick Kahl for State Representative District 49
Nick Kahl is a young Democrat and unapologetic progressive who has the ideals and motivation to successfully represent the needs his constituents. If we are lucky, this gentleman will be serving the people of Oregon for a long time to come. During his first term representing district 49 he:
-Introduced a bill which ended the bank exemption from the Unlawful Trade Practices Act which will prevent banks from misleading consumers which was a contributory factor in the current recession.
-Created environmentally responsible jobs through the Jobs and Transportation Act which funds maintenance and preservation projects in Oregon.
-Removed obstacles to employment through the Job Applicant Fairness Act.
When re-elected, Nick Kahl will continue to protect education, help struggling families and create jobs.
